PIPE Presents a Trinity of Irish Events
Tuesday, February 14, 2023
Following an action-packed Fall semester, Pirates of Irish Persuasion & Extraction (PIPE), Seton Hall’s student organization celebrating Irish culture, is planning a full roster of events for the Spring semester. PIPE invites students, faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the wider community to attend three upcoming events: a St. Brigid’s cross-making workshop (Thursday, February 23); a showing of the film The Secret of Roan Inish (Thursday, March 2); and a lecture on the Irish at Seton Hall (Friday, March 31).
"PIPE is excited to present these events, which celebrate the history and culture of Ireland—and the contributions of the Irish right here, at Seton Hall," said Elizabeth Walsh, PIPE President. "The variety in our programming this semester includes something for everyone who is interested in the Irish and Irish-American experience."
Taking place during this first year that Ireland is celebrating St. Brigid’s Day as a national bank holiday, PIPE is hosting its own first St. Brigid’s cross-making workshop. Led by Patrick Gallagher, a New Jersey-based artist who creates Celtic prints, paintings, sculptures, and jewelry, attendees will be led through the creation of their own St. Brigid’s crosses to bring home. While weaving rushes to make the crosses, they will learn from Gallagher about the life and influence of St. Brigid, as well as the myth and lore that predated and presaged her in pre-Christian Ireland. The workshop will take place on Thursday, February 23, at 3 p.m., in Arts & Sciences 107.
On Thursday, March 2, at 2:30 p.m., PIPE and the Center for Faculty Development will present a showing of the 1994 independent film The Secret of Roan Inish, as part of the Diversity Film Series. Touching on the connections among myth, history, and the daily goings-on in a village in County Donegal, this film is an exploration of land and people, legend and life. The film will be shown in Arts & Sciences 109.
Delivering a lecture titled "The Irish at Seton Hall," Dermot Quinn, D.Phil., Professor of History and Seton Hall’s resident seanchaí, will share some highlights of the long and storied history of the contributions of Irish-born and Irish-American standouts at Seton Hall. The lecture will take place on Friday, March 31, at 1 p.m., in Duffy 61.
"The variety in this year’s PIPE events is a testament to the officers’ dedication to providing high-quality programming for our University community," said Eilish R. Harrington, PIPE Advisor and the Institutional Planning and Communications Analyst at Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. "PIPE is looking forward to learning about and celebrating Irish culture at this semester’s events, and we always welcome the participation of new members."
Any students interested in joining PIPE should signal their interest on the campus-wide Engage platform or email pipe@shu.edu.
