On Friday, May 16, 2025, eight Seton Hall University Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program (PMPDPP) students embarked on a one-week international study abroad shadowing experience to Lisbon, Portugal through Atlantis by CEA CAPA Education Abroad, “a leading provider of study abroad programs and international internships.”

PMPDPP is honored for its students to have been the first Seton Hall University and EOF pre-medical program in NJ to participate in a study abroad of this magnitude.  Such is a testament to the program’s longstanding commitment to providing students with a premier student experience, as well as a diverse and collaborative environment that focuses on preparing students to be highly educated and skilled servant leaders.  This immersive experience included approximately 20 shadowing hours in multiple specialties and hospitals, as well as learning about the rich culture, sights and foods of one of the oldest cities in Europe. By shadowing surgical as well as non-surgical specialties, students were provided with a well-rounded approach to observing healthcare practices on a global level.

As rising sophomore, Lillian Eewshah explained,

Being able to see the difference between healthcare systems, shadowing doctors in a different country, gave me the opportunity to see new ways of treating and interacting with patients. I was able to observe my first surgery which opened my eyes to different specialties in medicine. Overall, this was a life-changing experience that made my love and passion for medicine grow.

Fellow rising sophomore, Luisa Rodriguez concurred,

Seeing different healthcare departments in Portugal was a very interesting and awesome experience. We were able to watch different surgeries and ask questions to the doctors. My most memorable highlight was being able to see a c-section and made me realize that this what I want to do for the rest of my life - to be part of the beautiful process of helping human life come into the world.

The PMPDPP - a Seton Hall EOF program under the Division of Student Services created by the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education (now known as the State of New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education) - has helped students gain acceptance into medical, dental and other graduate and professional schools for more than 50 years. One of its goals is to provide a diverse and collaborative environment that focuses on preparing EOF students to be highly educated and skilled servant leaders in a global society. An international shadowing experience in Lisbon, Portugal - accomplished thanks to university support and a generous donation from The Three Doctors Foundation – was instrumental to implementing this portion of its mission and sure to be impactful as its students continue to pursue their career aspiration.
