PPAC: Exploring Healthcare Professions
Friday, March 28, 2025
On March 21, Seton Hall University undergraduate pre-health students had a unique opportunity to explore various healthcare professions firsthand
at the School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS) on Seton Hall’s Nutley campus.
This immersive event allowed students to interact with professionals from diverse
healthcare fields and gain valuable insights into the different career paths available
in the healthcare sector.
Exposure to Health Professions
During the event, students were introduced to faculty and department chairs from various health-related fields, including Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), Athletic Training (AT), the Physician Assistant Program (PA) and the Master’s in Healthcare Administration (MHA). Each professional shared insights into their specialized field, highlighting the critical role each discipline plays in patient care and the healthcare system.
Hands-On Workshops: Bringing Healthcare Careers to Life
The core of the event featured a series of hands-on workshops that allowed students to engage directly with the tools and techniques used by professionals in different healthcare fields. These interactive sessions offered a glimpse into the daily tasks, challenges and rewards associated with each profession.
In the Physical Therapy (PT) workshop, students learned the proper technique for wrapping an ankle sprain, practicing on simulated patients under the guidance of experienced PT professionals. This session helped students grasp not only the physical techniques involved but also the critical thinking required to manage patient care.
In the Occupational Therapy (OT) workshop, students explored the components of a wheelchair
and received essential safety training on adjusting the chair to meet specific patient
needs. This session emphasized the importance of mobility challenges in patient care
across various healthcare settings.
During the Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) workshop, students delved into the complexities of feeding therapy, working with specialized utensils and engaging in simulated feeding exercises. These activities provided hands-on experience in addressing swallowing disorders, a key component of SLP practice.
One of the most exciting moments came during the Physician Assistant (PA) workshop, where students participated in a suturing clinic. They learned how to thread needles, use different stitching techniques and close wounds. The session emphasized the importance of safety and responsibility while handling medical tools, giving students a real-world sense of the skills required in medical practice. Students also had the opportunity to use an ophthalmoscope, learning how to examine the interior structure of the eye.
A Glimpse Into the Future of Healthcare: Simulated Hospital Environment
As the event concluded, students toured the simulation lab, a state-of-the-art facility designed to replicate real medical settings. Here, they observed mannequins simulating patients, with equipment like ventilators, IV poles, and monitoring devices. The simulation lab serves as an interprofessional space, allowing students from different healthcare disciplines to collaborate and develop their clinical skills in a controlled environment. This hands-on experience reinforced the importance of teamwork and communication in effective patient care.
Why Exploring Healthcare Professions Matters
Choosing a healthcare career is a significant decision that requires careful consideration and hands-on exploration. Events like the one held at the IHS Campus give students an invaluable opportunity to engage with various healthcare roles, helping them make informed decisions about their future.
For many students, the event confirmed their passion for a particular profession, solidifying their commitment to the demanding path of becoming a healthcare professional. For others, it offered a chance to reassess their career goals and explore new options that might better align with their interests and strengths.
