U.N. Secretary-General to Address Seton Hall Community  

Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, will address the University community and receive an honorary degree from Seton Hall on Monday, November 22 in the Walsh Gymnasium at 4:30 p.m. Mr. Ban will be visiting the University as part of the Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations' World Leaders Forum. He is anticipated to give a major policy address and will address the challenges and opportunities facing the UN and the global community.

A Transformative Leader

A native of the Republic of Korea, Ban Ki-moon became the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 1, 2007, succeeding Kofi Annan. Since then, he has been an advocate for issues ranging from climate change, to global health, and disarmament. Mr. Ban has led major reforms regarding peacekeeping and U.N. employment practices. He has brought to his post 37 years of service both in government and on the global stage. Prior to his term, he served as foreign minister and played a leading role in bringing about a landmark agreement aimed at promoting peace and stability on the Korean peninsula. He has managed a number of hurdles which include nuclear issues, the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan, and difficulties in the Middle East.
 
As Chef de Cabinet during the Republic of Korea's presidency of the General Assembly, Mr. Ban participated in the speedy adoption of the first resolution of the session, condemning the terrorist attacks of September 11th. He has implemented initiatives aimed at strengthening the General Assembly while executing global strides to confront current international difficulties.
