Kurly Kürtősh Coming to IHS

Chimney Cake

Chimney Cake

In honor of Black History Month, the Interprofessional Health Sciences (IHS) campus will be hosting a black-owned business from Nutley called Kurly Kürtősh Café. A University representative met with the owner, Nicole Shaw, to learn more about her business.

Seton Hall: What product and services do you offer customers?

Nicole Shaw: Kurly Kürtősh is the go-to destination for chimney cakes, a popular European pastry. It's a fun food, baked in front of you--a cool experience for everyone and their inner child.

Seton Hall: How did you get started in this business?

Shaw: I lived in Hungary for four years and was captivated by this pastry that you can find baking on the street corners of Hungary (and around Europe), but it’s almost unknown to everyone else. When I discovered that you can’t find these in NJ, I learned how to make them from a street food vendor and later from an award-winning Hungarian chimney cake baker. When I returned to the US in 2017, I set up a pop-up shop to gauge interest and then opened a brick and mortar in 2021 where we have a store front, host events and cater, to create one of the best dessert experiences around.

Seton Hall: What is your favorite customer feedback?

Shaw: Kurly Kürtősh is people's happy place - it's fun to watch, yummy to eat and creates a warm and inviting space whether we are in the shop or at an event.

Seton Hall: Anything else you want to share?

Shaw: It’s always a good time with Kurly - from party boxes to enjoy with friends, collabs at the store with top notch local eateries/ artisans (the Kurly Klub) or fun pop-ups around NJ. When Kurly is there, you will always have a good time! Kurly is on a mission to make the best chimney cake possible and bring people together through good times, deliciousness and chimney cake.

Seton Hall is so excited to host this incredible business at 11:30 a.m., February 20, at the IHS Campus in Nutley (while supplies last). Stop by, welcome Nicole Shaw to the campus and try some of her tasty treats.
