Heart of the University, Faculty Retreat Series 2023-2024
Tuesday, January 9, 2024
The Heart of the University Retreat Series gives faculty and administrators of all faiths the opportunity for input and guided reflection. The series is co-sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, and the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership.
The third retreat, given by Matthew Higgins, Ed.D., on the theme of "Virtue and the Catholic Intellectual Tradition: The Root of Catholic Education," will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, from 9-11 a.m. in the Beck Rooms via Microsoft Teams.
What exactly do we mean when we say "Catholic Education?" What makes it Catholic, and distinguishes it from its secular counterparts? What does it mean for the role I play at a Catholic University? This retreat will explore the root and deepest purpose of Catholic Education by way of exploring the role of theological and human virtues within the Catholic Intellectual Tradition. We will come to see how virtue links the mind, heart, and spirit and serves as the foundation for both an education and formation that is truly "Catholic."
Matthew Higgins, Ed.D., is the Director of Programs in the Center for Catholic Studies. In 2021, he earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership with an area of concentration in Catholic education and formation. He has taught in the formation program for the Missionaries of Charity, and has facilitated retreats for both parish and diocesan ministries.
