Teacher and researcher with decades of industry experience and community connections.

Dr. Patrick Bernet is an assistant professor at Seton Hall University in the Department of Interprofessional Health Sciences and Health Administration.

Dr. Patrick Bernet has over 35 years of experience in the health care industry. He was an information technology manager in health insurers, including Aetna and Cigna, where he helped implement one of the first Medicare Advantage plans and led projects that pioneered the use of physician report cards. He went on to consulting work, assessing the financial and operational performance of healthcare providers. His assignments included physician network formation, market assessment, managed care contract negotiation and he even managed a primary care practice in Newark.

Upon receiving his PhD, Patrick became an associate professor where he focused on teaching, service, and research. In his teaching assignments, he incorporates decades of industry experience into class lectures and assignments, adopts teaching technologies early, and has been named Teacher of the Year. Patrick’s service is focused on community healthcare organizations; working with several maternal and child health organizations, as well as the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. For research, Patrick applies economic and financial theory to study health behaviors, disparities, and pregnancy outcomes. He also researches the benefits and costs of health interventions. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed research papers in leading journals, such as The Milbank Quarterly, Social Science and Medicine, and Medical Care Research and Review.
