Heart of the University, Fourth Faculty Retreat 2025-26

Professor Marisa Case

Professor Marisa Case

The "Heart of the University" Retreat Series gives faculty and administrators of all faiths the opportunity for input and guided reflection.  The series is co-sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership.

The fourth retreat, given by Professor Marisa Case on the theme of "A Catholic Philosophy of Education: The Response – The Search for Knowledge and Transcendent Truth," will be held from 9-11 a.m., Thursday, March 26, 2026, in the Dean’s Conference Room, main floor, Walsh Library and via Microsoft Teams.

The retreat will focus on how Catholic higher education offers a redemptive vision to the search for knowledge and truth, where truth, goodness, faith and reason are intrinsically interconnected. A Catholic philosophy of education rooted in the loving relationship between God and humanity emphasizes the wholistic development of the individual, fostering a transformative shift in intellectual, moral and religious horizons. The retreat will address questions such as how might the University community come to a shared apprehension of this elevated concept of education?  Should it then be integrated into its governance and pedagogy?  In an age when crucial quantitative data-driven outcomes dominate, how can a Catholic university compete with its secular neighbors?

Marisa Case, MFA, is recently retired from Seton Hall University, having worked primarily as an academic advisor and instructor for the Center for Academic Success. She is a GEM Fellow in the Praxis Program of the Advanced Seminar on Mission.
