Reverend Christopher Ciccarino reflects on “Carriers of Meaning: The University Mission – Incarnating Meaning, The
Vocation of a University,” in the second of four retreats for faculty and administrators
of all faiths.
The Heart of the University Retreat Series gives faculty and administrators of all faiths the opportunity for input and guided reflection. The series is co-sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership.
The second retreat, given by Reverend Christopher Ciccarino on the theme of “Carriers of Meaning: The University Mission – Incarnating Meaning, The Vocation of a University,” will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2026, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Chancellor’s Suite, lower level, University Center, and via Microsoft Teams.
Education is, at its heart, the pursuit, discovery and sharing of meaning with our students and colleagues. Yet much of contemporary culture — both within and beyond the academy — seems to conspire against this vital life quest. We will explore how becoming “carriers of meaning,” that is, incarnating the meaning of the University mission, is the vocation of every member of the University community.
Please join us for a morning of reflection and discussion as we consider these fundamental challenges before us and discern how we, as a Catholic university, are called to incarnate meaning in our teaching, scholarship and shared life.
Reverend Christopher Ciccarino, SSL, STD, is an associate dean in Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology and an assistant professor of Biblical Studies. He serves as chair of the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools.
