Lactation Space Guidelines

Students who are nursing or lactating may request to use a lactation space to express milk while on campus.

On the South Orange campus, Schwartz Hall Room 217 has been designated as a lactation space.

All scheduling requests for use of the lactation space must be made by booking through the Title IX webpage by clicking on “Lactation Space”, which is located under the Support and Resources column. On the Lactation Space page, students can click, “Book a Room.” Once the space is scheduled, students must report to the Title IX Coordinator located in Bayley Hall, 1st floor, Room 110D, to sign for and retrieve the lactation space room key. The keys must be returned to the Title IX Coordinator at the conclusion of your scheduled time period. Students will be required to provide their name, student ID, and approximate dates/times that reasonable access to the lactation space will be needed. Any student whose needs change and wishes to cancel a lactation space reservation should make the changes as soon as possible through the reservation link.

The lactation space is to only be used for the purpose of expressing and collecting breast milk. It is not to be used for studying, sleeping, or any other purpose unrelated to lactation.

For health and safety reasons, a refrigerator is not provided in the lactation space. Because the lactation space may be used by more than person during the day, it is not permissible to store anything, including breast milk or equipment, in the space.

There is a sign outside of the lactation space to denote that the lactation space is either Occupied or Unoccupied. Please change the sign when you enter and leave the space and lock the door while in use and upon exiting the space to assist with safeguarding this private space for yourself and others.

Those using a lactation space are expected to clean up after themselves (wipe down the area) and remove all personal belongings. Disinfectant wipes are provided but are not intended to be used to clean personal equipment. If wipes are not available, please notify the Title IX Office at toni.hindsman@shu.edu.

If you encounter any issues or concerns with the lactation space, please contact Toni Hindsman, Director of EEO Compliance/Title IX Coordinator at toni.hindsman@shu.edu or (973) 275-2513.
