Seton Hall University Internship Partnership Guidelines for Employers
Seton Hall University’s career-based Internship Program connects students’ academic preparation with hands-on work experience. We are committed to partnering with organizations that provide high-quality, educationally relevant opportunities for our students.
As a sponsoring organization, you will have access to talented undergraduate and graduate students while demonstrating your commitment to Seton Hall’s educational mission and the professional growth of our students as future leaders.
We ask all partners to review the Department of Labor’s Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines for internship programs. The following outlines the mutual responsibilities of the University and your organization.
Responsibilities of the University
- With the student’s written consent, confirm academic eligibility for internship participation.
- Assign a faculty advisor and/or Career Center professional to help set learning objectives, monitor progress and evaluate academic performance.
- Maintain regular communication with the sponsoring organization to clarify policies, procedures and expectations.
- Keep all organization-specific information confidential.
- Ensure appropriate insurance coverage for foreseeable exposures related to the program.
Responsibilities of the Sponsoring Organization
- Provide accurate and transparent information about the organization, position responsibilities, recruitment process and any required confidentiality agreements (shared with the Career Center and signed by the intern before work begins).
- Maintain confidentiality regarding information about the student and the University.
- Offer a safe, inclusive and harassment-free work environment, with necessary equipment, supplies and workspace provided.
- Assign a qualified supervisor/mentor to train, guide and evaluate the student, ensuring projects promote personal and professional growth.
- Limit clerical tasks to no more than 20% of responsibilities and for internships over 12 weeks, expand responsibilities progressively.
- Maintain open communication with the University, including prompt updates on changes to the student’s status or performance and allow site visits by Career Center or faculty advisors.
- Provide ongoing feedback and complete a final performance evaluation supplied by the Career Center.
Criteria for Intern Position Descriptions
- The internship must foster skill development and confidence.
- The sponsoring organization must provide a written position description, including supervisor details.
- Orientation or training must be provided.
- No more than 20% of duties may be clerical.
- For internships exceeding 12 weeks, responsibilities should expand progressively over time.
Terms of Arrangement
If the sponsoring organization is dissatisfied with the student’s performance, termination may be requested after notifying the Career Center and attempting resolution.
The University may also request termination if a student fails to comply with Community Standards, after notifying the sponsoring organization and attempting resolution.
