Students in the Adult Gerontology Acute nurse practitioner program learn interdisciplinary skills during simulation experiences

U.S. News & World Report has again recognized Seton Hall University in its 2025 ranking of Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs.

Seton Hall’s Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) climbed to 21st out of 198 programs at U.S. colleges and universities that met the criteria for inclusion. The latest ranking places Seton Hall in the top 11 percent of all programs nationwide, third among all Catholic colleges and universities and — once again — the top-ranked program in New Jersey.

“We are thrilled that the College of Nursing’s commitment to academic excellence, innovative online learning and student success continues to earn national acclaim,” said College of Nursing Interim Dean and Associate Professor Kristi Stinson, Ph.D., R.N., APN-BC. “Since launching our graduate program in 1975, Seton Hall has been preparing nurses for premier leadership roles in hospitals, academic institutions and beyond.”

Highly skilled nurse practitioners, researchers and educators are more critical than ever in today’s complex healthcare landscape. Stinson noted, “With the nation facing a growing nursing shortage over the next decade, Seton Hall remains committed to mentoring a new generation of healthcare advocates to lead the nursing field during this critical time.”

Flexible Online Training for Busy Professionals
Students in Seton Hall’s M.S.N. programs — comprised of six individual tracks — complete their coursework online, at their own pace.

“A lot of my coworkers in other programs attend classes in person, so they have to arrange days off from their work schedule,” said Carlos Guevara, a full-time R.N. in New York City and student in the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. “Seton Hall’s online program makes it so much easier for me to coordinate my schedule with work and school.”

Future Nurse Practitioners

Future nurse practitioners in Seton Hall's M.S.N. programs practice clinical skills in the University's state-of-the-art simulation center and skills labs.

Award-Winning Facilities Prepare Students for Real-World Practice
Another key differentiator of Seton Hall’s M.S.N. degree programs is the series of “Immersions” held at the University’s Interprofessional Health Sciences campus in Nutley, NJ. Students participate in three Immersions, including advanced skills labs and simulation experiences that prepare them for on-site clinical training rotations required for the degree.

“In our simulation facilities, students gain interdisciplinary skills that equip them for the rigors of clinical practice and set them up for success in their future careers,” said Mary Ellen Roberts, D.N.P., R.N., A.P.N.C., professor and chair of the graduate nursing department and director of the Doctor of Nurse Practitioner program.

In 2023, the College of Nursing, in partnership with the School of Health and Medical Sciences, secured a $1.14 million federal grant to enhance its Simulation Center facilities. The grant-funded technology upgrades elevate the quality of clinical preparation for students in Seton Hall’s graduate programs in nursing and the health professions.

Nationally Recognized Clinical Experiences
Among the College’s innovative clinical experiences is a groundbreaking partnership with the city of Newark, NJ. Students in the adult-gerontology primary care, pediatric primary care, and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner programs participate in semester-long clinical training in nurse-led mobile health care units providing care to Newark’s medically underserved residents.

The College launched the four-year program in 2022 with the support of a $3.6 million federal training grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
