Unanue Scholarships and Stipends

The Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute offers the following undergraduate and graduate scholarship opportunities for eligible students. We encourage students to submit their application for consideration.

The Joseph and Carmen Ana Unanue Student Scholarship Fund

  • Deadline: June 1
  • Amount: Variable,

    Students may reapply annually for consideration.

  • Eligibility:
    1. Incoming freshmen or students currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree-granting program at Seton Hall University.
    2. Must demonstrate an appreciation of Latino/Hispanic culture, history, and/or community life.
    3. Must have FAFSA form on file with Enrollment Services and demonstrate financial need.
    4. Must have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA at Seton Hall University.
    Requisite: Write a two-page double-spaced essay demonstrating your appreciation of Latino/Hispanic culture, history, and/or community life. Be sure to reference the Latino Institute events you have attended. Please attach essay to the application form.
    Selection:The Joseph and Carmen Ana Student Scholarship award will be given to selected students based on academic performance, involvement in the Seton Hall community, and financial need. Award notifications will be sent to all applications 4-6 weeks after application deadlines. Awarded funds will be credited directly to the student’s Bursar account. Please note:
    • Award amount is variable
    • Award renewal is available, not guaranteed, and contingent upon students maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA and active involvement in the Joseph A. Unanue Latino Institute.
    • The award is contingent on mandatory attendance of two (2) Latino Institute events per semester.

Lider Award

  • Deadline: June 1
  • Amount: $3000
  • Eligibility: To qualify for consideration, students must meet the following criteria:
    • Must be currently enrolled as a full time undergraduate student (excluding incoming Freshmen) at Seton Hall University;
    • Must show an appreciation of Latino/Hispanic culture, history, and/or community life;
    • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 (Undergraduate).
    Requisite: Write a two-page, double-spaced essay proposal outlining the service project that would be fulfilled over the course of the academic year upon selection and attach the proposal to the application. A report on the service project outcomes and the use of funds will be due to the Latino Institute at the conclusion of the academic year. Selection:
    This award will be given to selected students based on academic performance, involvement in the Seton Hall community and financial need. Award notification will be sent to all applicants 4-6 weeks after the application deadline. Award funds will only be credited to the student’s bursar account. Please note:
    • $3,000.00 will be awarded to the students who show a commitment to engaging in the Latino community and who will work on a community project for one academic year.
    • $2,500 will be for tuition relief and $500 will be for project expenses.
    • The award is contingent on mandatory attendance of two (2) Latino Institute events per semester.

Joseph and Carmen Ana Unanue MPA Student Scholarship

  • Deadline: April 30
  • Amount: Variable,
  • Eligibility: The Unanue scholarships for MPA students are made possible through a generous endowment from Joseph and Carmen Ana Unanue. Each year the department awards approximately $10,000 to MPA students and all MPA students are eligible to apply. Typical awards range from $1,000 to $3,000 per year.
