Understanding Costs and Financial Aid
Get a clear picture of what to expect financially when studying abroad, from tuition
and program fees to financial aid, scholarships, and additional expenses. Costs and
payment structures vary across Spring Embedded, Summer Abroad, and Semester Abroad programs, so the information below breaks down what to expect for each program format.
There is no financial commitment or cost to apply to any Seton Hall Study Abroad Program.
Once you are approved, you can decide whether you wish to secure your spot by completing
the Confirmation process as outlined in your Study Abroad Portal.
Spring Embedded Programs
Tuition: For undergraduate students, Spring Embedded courses are included in regular Spring tuition when enrolled in 12–18 credits. Credits above 18 are charged at the Bursar’s per-credit rate. Graduate students pay per credit as they would for any other Spring course.
Program Fee: Undergraduate and graduate students pay a separate Program Fee covering the travel components listed on the program webpage. The Program Fee is paid through the Study Abroad Portal and is divided into a $500 non-refundable deposit and a final balance.
Financial Aid & Scholarships: Financial aid applies to the Spring term bill as it would for any other Spring course but cannot directly reduce the Program Fee. Seton Hall Study Abroad Scholarships are applied directly to the Program Fee, while external scholarships are typically paid directly to the student and can be used toward program costs.
Deposit & Financial Commitments: Once approved, students must submit a $500 non-refundable deposit through the Study Abroad Portal to secure their spot. The deposit is applied toward the Program Fee. If a student withdraws after confirmation, the deposit is not refunded. Review the Acknowledgment Agreement in the Study Abroad Portal for complete financial commitments and withdrawal terms.
Additional Costs: Students should budget for costs not included in the Program Fee, which may include airfare, housing, meals, local transportation, and personal expenses. Check the program’s Details tab for specific inclusions, as these vary by program, or consult your Faculty Leader or the Study Abroad team.
Summer Abroad Programs
Tuition: Summer Abroad tuition is charged per credit at the Bursar-set rate for undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty-Led Programs receive a 25% tuition discount for programs under one month and a 50% discount for month-long programs. These discounts do not apply to Partner University Programs; consult the individual program webpage for specific tuition and course costs.
Program Fee: Faculty-Led Programs have a separate Program Fee covering the travel components and other inclusions listed on the program webpage. The Program Fee is paid through the Study Abroad Portal and is divided into a $500 non-refundable deposit and a final balance. For Partner University Programs, costs and payment structures vary by program.
Financial Aid & Scholarships: Financial aid is generally not available for Summer Abroad, as financial aid is applied during the Fall and Spring semesters. Students should consult the Office of Financial Aid to determine whether funding may be available. Seton Hall Study Abroad Scholarships are applied directly to the Program Fee for Faculty-Led Programs, while external scholarships are typically paid directly to the student and can be used toward program costs.
Deposit & Financial Commitments: Once approved, students must submit a $500 non-refundable deposit through the Study Abroad Portal to secure their spot. The deposit is applied toward the Program Fee for Faculty-Led Programs or the Summer tuition bill for Partner University Programs. If a student withdraws after confirmation, the deposit is not refunded. Review the Acknowledgment Agreement in the Study Abroad Portal for complete financial commitments and withdrawal terms.
Additional Costs: Students should budget for costs not included in their Summer Abroad Program, which may include airfare, housing, meals, local transportation, and personal expenses. Check the program’s Details tab for specific inclusions, as these vary by program. For guidance, consult your Faculty Leader for Faculty-Led Programs or the Study Abroad team for Partner University Programs.
Semester Abroad Programs
Tuition: For Seton Hall Programs, students pay Seton Hall tuition at their existing rate through PirateNet, with all institutional scholarships and financial aid remaining applicable.
USAC Fees: For USAC Semester Abroad Programs, Seton Hall covers the USAC Program Fee and fees for credit-bearing courses and internships. Students are responsible for optional, non-credit tours and excursions.
Financial Aid & Scholarships: Financial aid and institutional scholarships remain applicable to the student’s Seton Hall tuition bill. Seton Hall Study Abroad Scholarships are also applied directly to the tuition bill. External scholarships are typically paid directly to the student, while USAC Scholarships are applied toward housing costs.
Housing: Students pay housing costs directly to USAC or the host university’s affiliated housing provider, depending on their program and housing selection.
University Fees: Students pay the Seton Hall University Fee and Technology Fee at the rates set by the Bursar. The Mobile Computing Fee also applies to students in the University Laptop Program unless they have already paid it for four semesters. Students who have not met this requirement and are not bringing their University-issued laptop abroad must return it to the Mobile Computing Office.
Deposit & Financial Commitments: Once approved, students must submit a $500 non-refundable deposit through the Study Abroad Portal to secure their nomination. The deposit is applied as a $500 credit toward the Semester Abroad tuition bill. If a student withdraws after nomination, the credit is removed and the deposit is not refunded. Review the Acknowledgment Agreement in the Study Abroad Portal for complete financial commitments and withdrawal terms.
Additional Costs: Students should budget for costs not covered by tuition or housing, which may include airfare, meals, local transportation, visas, personal expenses, and independent travel. Visit your program’s country hub for destination-specific information. USAC students can also consult their USAC Advisor and the interactive budget sheet available on each program page.
