Migration Expert Yan Matusevich to Speak at Seton Hall

Journalist and migration expert Yan Matusevich will deliver a talk "The Politicization
of Migration around the Globe."
Despite the fact that the proportion of migrants in the world population has remained relatively stable since WWII, the dominant public and media discourse on migration is inundated with terms such as "mass migration" and "unprecedented global refugee crisis." Though these claims are not supported by existing data and decades of migration research, skewed and inaccurate perceptions on migration remain dominant in both policy-making and among the general public. This talk will seek to shed light on the way migration is increasingly being framed as a challenge at best and a threat at worst, leading to a series of counterproductive and inhumane policy responses around the world.
Yan Matusevich is a Vienna-based journalist, researcher and analyst with a focus on migrant rights in Europe, Russia and Central Asia. Yan previously worked as a researcher at the International Center for Migration Policy Development where he was responsible for a number of research projects related to labor migration, forecasting of migration trends and the root causes of displacement. He holds an MSc in Migration Studies from the University of Oxford and completed a bachelor's degree in political science at Bard College.
