Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice
If you are studying any of the following majors, you are one of ours! Whether studying for a bachelor’s in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminal Justice or Social Behavioral Sciences, we are honored to welcome you to a vibrant interdisciplinary faculty and student body.
Who are your professors? You will have 13 full time professors who are experts in their field.
Where is the Department and the faculty located?
The Department is in two buildings in the South Orange campus. You can find me, our
Department secretary, and your advisors and faculty in Sociology, Anthropology and
Social Behavioral Sciences in Jubilee Hall (5th Floor) just off the Green while your
Criminal Justice advisors and professors may be found in AS Hall (2nd Floor) just
behind the University Center.
Why are there so many programs in the Department?
We believe that a vibrant college experience should introduce you to lifelong learning
that balances theory and practice. Being a major in our Department immerses you in
our four programs’ distinct strengths – dive into Anthropology’s faculty-student research projects; publish your Sociology or Social Behavioral Sciences paper in a peer review journal; gain professional experience before graduation through your Criminal Justice internship
vetted by the Career Center. Because of our breadth, we can also connect you with other faculty, programs or
opportunities across the university who are doing just the very thing that interests
you!
What should I do if I want to do research or look for an internship?
Begin with the mundane: attend classes, have conversations, find out your professors’
office hours, drop by, seek targeted academic advising, and talk to us about your
interests. We look at the whole person and help you find a fit within your chosen
major or tailor a course of study that is informed by specialist knowledge. Visit
the Career Center, learn to craft a resume and attend the many on-campus career fairs.
What have students in the four majors done after graduating?
The best way to answer this is to connect you with fellow students and alumni beyond
the classroom (and beyond graduation) through alumni networks, Honor Societies, film and lecture events, career talks and more. We do a several of these events
every semester (often with food, sometimes unusual, mostly familiar).
Become part of our programs within the vibrant College of Arts and Sciences and join Seton Hall’s consistently successful cohort of students employed or admitted to graduate school within six months of earning their degree - 97% for the Class of 2024! In all that we do, faculty and fellow students will show the way.
