English Professor Takes Students to Morgan Stanley for Inspiring Black History Event
Wednesday, February 26, 2025
English Professor, Mildred Antenor, recently took her Business Writing class to a
special Black History Month event at Morgan Stanley: Morgan Stanley Fireside Chat
with Ruth Simmons – Empowerment Through Education.
Simmons, the first Black woman to serve as President of an Ivy League University, shared insights from her book, Up Home, detailing her non-idyllic journey and the hard work required to reach her level of success. During the 45-minute discussion, she spoke about her upbringing, the lessons her parents instilled in her and how she gradually recognized her own path to leadership by seeing other women lead. She emphasized the importance of self-improvement, reflection and embracing diverse perspectives.
Professor Antenor’s goal for the approximately 15 students in attendance was to help them develop their networking and communication skills. In preparation for the event, Professor Antenor guided her students through the process of designing and printing professional business cards and provided key networking tools to help them make meaningful connections. She emphasized the importance of confidence, active listening and effective communication to ensure they presented their best selves. She challenged each student to meet at least two or three new people and later reflect on their experience.
“It’s important that every student take advantage of these networking opportunities on and off campus. Not only does it teach students about the business world in a very real and practical way but, when students put their best feet forward, it’s an affirmative light on Seton Hall and what we’re doing at the University. What was especially gratifying for me was the clarity that I noticed with my students after they attended the Morgan Stanley fireside chat. It was evident that they were able to connect what we’ve discussed in the classroom to what was happening at the event."
The experience offered students an invaluable lesson on leadership, resilience and the power of education—principles that Simmons has championed throughout her historic career.
