Msgr. James Cafone Catholic Mission Vitae Gaudium Award

Msgr. Cafone Headshot 288x432The Program of Catholic Studies is pleased to announce the Annual Msgr. James Cafone Catholic Mission Vitae Gaudium Awards, which will be presented on April 25, 2019. The awards and ceremony will honor the memory of Msgr. James Cafone who devotedly and joyfully served the Seton Hall University, the Archdiocese of Newark and the surrounding Catholic community for 47 years.

The Msgr. James Cafone Catholic Mission Vitae Gaudium Awards recognize Seton Hall University Seniors who demonstrate Msgr. Cafone's spirit of compassion, service and dedication to the mission of Seton Hall University and the Catholic faith community. "Msgr. Cafone was a giant we will never forget. His vision and missions lives with us," said Dr. Ines Angeli Murzaku, Professor and Director of Catholic Studies adding "although three years have passed since his death, Msgr. Cafone is cherished by our students who still speak of Msgr. Cafone's popular classes taught by "the big man"."

Seton Hall University Seniors who wish to be considered for this award must write an essay reflecting on how they have inspired, encouraged and enlightened others and how they have shared in the joy of Christ through their personal and professional lives.

Three winning essays will appear in Arcadia magazine, which is published by the Program and Center for Catholic Studies at Seton Hall University.

The winners to be given $100.00 gift cards and Msgr. James Cafone Catholic Mission Vitae Gaudium Award Certificates.

Online and Hard Copy Submission Requirements Each essay will be evaluated for originality, execution, and adherence to the following topic and format requirements:

  • Essays must be between 500 and 750 words 
  • Entries must be written in English 
  • Only one entry per student 
  • All information requested below under "Submit your Essay" must be submitted

Deadline All essays must be submitted by March 20, 2019. The authors of the top three winning entries will be notified by April 10, 2019.
