Philosophers Speak: Professor Rattan on the Self

Gurpreet Rattan

Gurpreet Rattan, Professor of Philosophy at University of Toronto

On Thursday, February 6th, from 5-6:30 p.m., in Jubilee Auditorium, the Department of Philosophy and the Dean’s Office of the College of Arts and Sciences will host the next speaker in the Philosophers Speak lecture series. This lecture brings to campus Gurpreet Rattan, Professor of Philosophy at University of Toronto.

Professor Rattan’s talk is titled, “An Objective Proof of a Subjective Self.” In it he will consider Descartes’ reasoning for the existence of the self. How does this reasoning go? And is this reasoning sound? Professor Rattan will argue for a kind of proof of the subjective self, based in considerations of the possibility of objective thinking.

Professor Rattan works in Epistemology, Philosophy of Language, and Philosophy of Mind. He has published a number of works including, “Are Propositions Mere Measures of Mind,” Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, “Truth Incorporated,” Nous, and the edited book, New Essays on the Nature of Propositions (Routledge). He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department at University of Toronto.
