Seton Hall MPA Students Volunteer at MESH

Students Volunteering with MESH

Students helped MESH organize clothing donations to provide winter attire for those in need.

Gabrielle Rossi, Ph.D., and her class of students in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, had the opportunity to volunteer at the Montclair Emergency Services for Hope (MESH).

MESH is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Montclair’s most vulnerable populations, including homeless adults and families. The organization collaborates with churches, synagogues and other community groups to provide essential services such as nutritious evening meals six days a week and overnight respite during extreme weather conditions.

During the volunteer day, Rossi and her students sorted clothing donations to provide appropriate winter attire for those in need. They also assisted individuals in selecting clothing, shoes and personal hygiene products. This hands-on experience aimed to connect students with the local community and emphasize the value of servant leadership.

Students volunteering“The most rewarding part of my role as a professor is hosting volunteer nights for my students,” said Rossi. “These events bridge classroom learning with real-world impact, connecting future public administrators to the incredible practitioners and organizations making a difference every day. Seeing students build relationships and gain hands-on experience while giving back to their community is inspiring. Especially now, channeling energy into meaningful action to support organizations that work tirelessly for our collective good is so important.”

This initiative marks the first in a series of volunteer efforts led by Rossi and the MPA program. The next scheduled event will occur at St. John’s Food Kitchen in Newark. Details are being finalized and will be shared soon.
