“Remembering Gorby: Mikhail Gorbachev’s Triumphs and Tragedies”  

Students and all Seton Hall members are invited by the Slavic Club, the Russian and East European Studies Program (REESP) and the History Department for the lecture, "Remembering Gorby: Mikhail Gorbachev's Triumphs and Tragedies."

This event will take place on Thursday, October 13, 2022, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in Fahy Hall, Room 236, or virtually via Microsoft Teams.

The recent passing of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, has brought forth an outpouring of tributes and condolences. Beloved in much of the West for terminating the Cold War and bringing about the end of the USSR, Gorbachev remained a rather controversial figure in his native land.
Who was he? A forward-looking and courageous reformer, who helped to dismantle a decaying Soviet colossus and pulled the world back from the brink of a superpower conflict? A peace-loving, anti-imperialist, who liberated the East European and Baltic nations from the Soviet yoke? Or just a hapless bystander, dragged along by the momentous historical developments, that he inadvertently unleashed? What are we to make of his legacy now, when so many of the early hopes for an impending "end of history" have been dashed and post-Soviet Russia is waging a brutal war against its neighbor?

Professors Nathaniel Knight and Maxim Matusevich of the History Department will make a presentation on the topic, and it will be followed by Q&A session.

The event is free and everyone is welcome!
