Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

Mission Statement

The IACUC at Seton Hall University is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the proper care, use, and humane treatment of animals used in research, teaching and training at Seton Hall. Animal facilities are maintained by the Departments of Biological Sciences and Psychology (College of Arts and Sciences) and the Department of Neuroscience (School of Health and Medical Science). All faculty, staff and students working with animals in Seton Hall  facilities are obligated to follow the high standard of care as mandated by the Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service Policy.

To fulfill this obligation the IACUC follows The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and has a letter of assurance filed with The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW).

The Associate Provost, Research and Innovation, is the institutional official and appoints the IACUC members:

Reporting Animal Concerns

Concern for the welfare of animals used in research and teaching is the responsibility of all members of the University community.

Any Seton Hall University student or employee observing any apparent deficiency in animal care or use is encouraged to report such practice as follows:

Submission of a non-compliance concern if an urgent IACUC exists

  1. Contact the EH&S administrator immediately by calling (973) 382-2312. The administrator will take any necessary action including contacting the Associate provost.
  2. If the situation is not an emergency, the concern or complaint can be submitted with anonymity to the IACUC Office.
Reporting Procedures
  1. Note the date, time, location and species of animal involved.
  2. Provide a complete description of the act including personnel involved and any other details that will help to assess the complaint.
  3. Report the information via e-mail to IACUC@shu.edu or contact Jose Alvarez, EH&S Administrator at (973) 761-9039.

Other
The IO in conjunction with the IACUC, will review and investigate concerns.
The IO will ensure methods for reporting and investigating animal welfare concerns are established, communicated and maintained.

IACUC Review Process

Any research project, class activity, or testing procedure involving the use of animals must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC before initiation.  The process for submitting a project, activity or testing procedure for review, is outlined in the IACUC Review Process.
