Strategic Influencing Series

Gain the Power of the U Perspective – Convince, Collaborate, Create

Being successful often means convincing others to do what you want. As we move beyond the pandemic into a variety of work arrangements, including more people working partially or fully remote, influencing skills become both more important and more nuanced.

To be an effective influencer, says management training coach and author Lee Miller, you must start by considering a person's point of view – their U Perspective. "When I understand your U Perspective," he writes, "I can predict your next move with certainty. I can craft my responses in ways that not only make you do what I want but satisfy your needs and aspirations as well."

In his workshops on strategic influencing, offered by Seton Hall University, Miller unpacks the U Perspective and teaches participants how they can control situations, whether at home or at work, and positively affect outcomes. Miller's workshops introduce key strategies for influencing and communication. The Advanced program includes a hands-on, skill-building session on advanced strategic influencing.

Join us with other thought leaders and gain the power of strategic influencing by taking part in whatever aspects of our series interest you most. We offer a discounted rate for attending a full-day session. You can start with the morning session and follow with the advanced workshop in the afternoon.

Career Coach Lee Miller on Strategic Influencing

Professor Lee E. Miller discusses the arts and science of Strategic Influencing and offers negotiating skills that will make you more effective and power your career forward.

Curriculum

Through these highly interactive workshops students will experience the process of influencing. They will observe, participate in and analyze different situations and design appropriate strategies to achieve goals and maximize outcomes. Participants will practice building consensus within and across teams, and learn how to exercise subtle influence, without resistance.

In the Strategic Influencing and Communication workshop, students begin to understand and approach influencing in a systemic way, being aware of the context in which influencing takes place and how the roles of individuals and other factors can determine outcomes. Participants will learn how individuals interact and see a situation and what will motivate them to support a proposed plan of action, taking into account the situational and cultural context. They will also learn about the roles and impact individuals have on the influence process, but are not present.

During the Advanced Strategic Influencing workshop, students learn how to develop an influencing plan, while considering the roles of various players in the decision-making process, and building on the skills developed in the prerequisite workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to observe, participate, and ask questions to improve their influencing skills and to learn from real life practical examples. Participants will explore and perform small group exercises, allowing the attendees to practice and master various influencing skills.
