Basic Health Assessment Refresher Course

The Seton Hall University Basic Health Assessment Refresher course is a computer-based learning program that provides an opportunity for registered nurses to further develop and hone basic health assessment skills prior to beginning an advanced health assessment course. Nurse practitioner students outside of Seton Hall who need this course are also welcomed to register.

This refresher course involves asynchronous self-study using a textbook and its online course material PLUS practice with a self-selected qualified mentor that is an APRN, MD, or DO and approved by the course coordinator. Students will learn how to complete a head-to-toe physical assessment in a systematic manner by demonstrating the skills and techniques on their mentor. Although you may complete this program at your own pace and time, you will have up to 5.5 weeks to complete the course to be awarded contact hours.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Distinguish subjective from objective data
  2. Carry out a basic assessment of selected systems
  3. Discriminate normal variations and abnormal findings in selected systems
  4. Recognize the components of health histories
  5. Utilize therapeutic communication techniques and effective interpersonal skills to obtain a comprehensive health history from a healthy adult
  6. Demonstrate competency in physical assessment techniques to obtain objective data from a healthy adult
  7. Differentiate between normal and abnormal health findings when presented with assessment data
  8. Critically examine developmental and sociocultural factors in relation to health assessment.

To earn a certificate for 25 contact hours, participants must fully complete the following: an online evaluation form within 10 days of the end of the program, all computer-based learning modules of the program and a return demonstration of a head-to-toe physical assessment.

Seton Hall University College of Nursing is an approved provider of nursing continuing professional development by the New Jersey State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Provider Number: P196-11/23-26. The faculty have declared no conflict of interest, there is no commercial support for this program.

None of the planners for this educational activity have relevant financial relationships to disclose with ineligible companies whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients. There is no commercial support for this activity. To successfully earn a contact hour certificate, participants must complete all units, receive a score of 6/6 on each unit post test and submit a signed Mentor Verification Form indicating satisfactory completion of all aspects of the physical examination. Certificates will be distributed electronically.
