Interview with Khemmis before their show at St. Vitus

Date: February 17, 2017

Despite only being around for a few years, Khemmis have garnered quite the reputation for themselves. After a well-received debut album in 2015, the band stormed back with Hunted in 2016, an album that landed the Denver doom metal band on many publication's Best Albums of 2016 list.

The band has crafted a unique sound in the doom genre, seeing the lack of bands that have minor harmonizing riffs. With band members having an eclectic background, ranging from death metal to their fondness for Thin Lizzy and other bands. Their description is a "melting pot of 70s rock, slowed down and make it fuzzy." Ben Hutcherson, one of the guitarist and the death metal style vocalist humorously referred to them as "Iron Maiden on Quaaludes" and "Judas Priest with a head injury."

Coming from a vibrant and excellent Denver metal scene, Khemmis has a lot of influences and support from other bands in the area as well as the fans there. That's also where they work their day jobs, that make their musical success even more impressive. Phil and Ben (guitars, vocals) are both going for their PHDs, Zach (drummer) is the head brewer at TRVE Brewing, and Dan (Bass) is a civil engineer.

All of the guys in Khemmis are super friendly, nice and very funny. What else would you expect from a group of guys whose band started thanks to a picture of Jawas carry a vintage Sunn tube amplifier on Craiglist.

Their show at Saint Vitus was absolutely killer, and they put on one of the best live performances I have ever been to. Their music translates really well to the stage and it sounds epic live. On top of that, they were really nice guys and gave me a lot of their time for a very great interview.

So make sure to check out my interview with them where they give insight on their music and the Hunted album, working with producer Dave Otero, balancing touring with their everyday lives and more.

Also be sure to check out both of their albums since they're really incredible, and they're recording two more songs that will be released this summer!
